A cabinet reshuffle is likely to take place in Uttarakhand before the 2027 State Assembly elections, sources said.
The reshuffle may happen either before or after Holi, and discussions are ongoing between the Chief Minister and senior party leaders in New Delhi and Dehradun.
The Chief Minister recently returned to Dehradun after a two-day visit to the national capital. During his trip, he held the first round of talks with state in-charge Dushyant Gautam and other senior leaders regarding the reshuffle.
Meanwhile, the Central Government has appointed Uttarakhand Finance Minister Premchand Agarwal as a member of a special Group of Ministers (GoM). This group has been formed to explore the possibility of imposing a special disaster cess in case of natural calamities.
The GST Council has set up the seven-member GoM to study the legal and constitutional aspects of such a cess. The panel includes:
- Suresh Kumar Khanna (Uttar Pradesh)
- Premchand Agarwal (Uttarakhand)
- Ajanta Neog (Assam)
- OP Choudhary (Chhattisgarh)
- Kanubhai Desai (Gujarat)
- KN Balagopal (Kerala)
- Chandrima Bhattacharya (West Bengal)
The GoM will determine how to classify an event as a natural calamity under the GST system, allowing the imposition of a special cess for disaster relief.
