In a groundbreaking move, Uber India has launched the country’s first-ever water transport service in Jammu and Kashmir. The new service allows users to book Shikaras on Dal Lake in Srinagar through the Uber app, marking a revolution in India’s transport sector, according to a senior company official on Monday.
This initiative also makes India the first Asian country to introduce Uber’s water transport service, confirmed an Uber spokesperson.
"Uber Shikara is our humble attempt to blend technology and tradition, offering travellers a seamless experience for their Shikara ride. We are proud to create this iconic service, enhancing accessibility and promoting tourism in the stunning landscape of Kashmir," said Prabhjeet Singh, Uber India and South Asia President, in a statement to the press.
Uber is already offering water transport services in globally popular tourist destinations like Amsterdam and Venice. Although the current fleet includes only seven Shikaras, the company plans to expand the service based on demand.
Uber users will be able to book Shikaras at government-designated rates, providing relief to those who rely on them for transport. A company spokesperson confirmed that Uber will not charge platform fees from Shikara operators, with the full fare directly credited to their accounts.
Each Uber Shikara ride lasts for one hour, between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m., with a capacity for up to four passengers. The rides can be booked up to 12 hours in advance, or up to 15 days ahead.
"Uber’s service will boost business for Shikara operators, as it eliminates the need for bargaining and ensures fixed rates, offering greater certainty and income for them," said Wali Mohammad Bhatt, President of the Shikara Owners Association. "We expect more Shikaras to join Uber based on the response from tourists."
In addition to the Shikara service, Uber also provides regular cab bookings in Srinagar.
