The University Grants Commission (UGC) has granted recognition to Bihar Sports University, the state’s first sports-focused institution, located in Rajgir, Nalanda district.
With this recognition under Section 2(f) of the UGC Act, 1956, the university is now officially listed among UGC-accredited institutions.
Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar had inaugurated Bihar Sports University on National Sports Day, August 29, 2023. The university is part of the International Sports Complex in Rajgir and aims to promote education and training in physical education and sports sciences.
According to a statement issued by the university, this UGC recognition empowers it to introduce academic programs starting in the 2025–2026 session. These will include undergraduate and diploma courses, such as:
- Diploma/Post Graduate Diploma (PGD) in Sports Coaching for two or three games
- Diploma/Post Graduate Diploma in Yoga
- Four-year Bachelor of Physical Education (BPEd), subject to approval from the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE).
- Retired IAS officer Shishir Sinha has been appointed as the first Vice Chancellor of Bihar Sports University by the state government.
In line with UGC guidelines, the university will also appoint an Ombudsperson under the UGC (Redressal of Grievances of Students) Regulations, 2023.
This measure is to ensure the resolution of student grievances within two months of academic activities commencing. The recognition of Bihar Sports University by the UGC marks a significant milestone in advancing sports education in the state.
