An unexploded mortar bomb was found near Manipur’s Koirengei, which is close to the private residence of Chief Minister N Biren Singh.
The incident was reported from a distance of kilometre from Luwangshangbam on Tuesday morning.
It has been learnt from the locals that a rocket-propelled bomb was fired last night but failed to detonate.
The unexploded 51 mm mortar bomb was discovered early today, triggering panic in the area.
As the complaint was received, security measures were intensified in the area.
An investigation to determine the source of the live bomb and the motive behind its placement near the Chief Minister’s residence has started.
In a separate incident, a hand grenade was found near the residence of a public works department (PWD) special contractor in Imphal East, under the jurisdiction of Heingang police station, on Sunday.
Meanwhile, the Manipur police issued a press statement late Saturday announcing the arrest of six cadres of the proscribed underground outfit PREPAK (People’s Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak) and the killing of one member in Salungpham, Thoubal district, under the jurisdiction of Heirok police station.
