Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan on Thursday held a detailed meeting with J&K Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and discussed the ongoing security situation, counter-insurgency operations, and the operational preparedness of security forces in the UT ahead of the Republic Day celebrations, officials said.

Mohan, who is on a two-day visit to Jammu, also chaired a high-level meeting on Thursday to review heightened operational readiness in the higher reaches and forest areas.

The Home Secretary called on the LG at Lok Bhawan on Thursday morning and discussed a wide range of issues, including security, operations, and development-related matters in Jammu and Kashmir, officials said.

The duo reviewed the prevailing security situation, particularly on both sides of the Pir Panjal region, they said. Officials familiar with the discussions said that inter-agency coordination among the police, Army, paramilitary forces, and intelligence agencies was also reviewed.

The Home Secretary also chaired several meetings for the second consecutive day at the convention centre in Jammu, where top security officials of various agencies and forces participated, officials said.

One of the key meetings focused on reviewing border security management, enhanced security measures in the hills of Jammu, inter-agency coordination, and assessing the ongoing anti-terror operations and drone incursions along the borders.

The discussions took place nearly a week after Union Home Minister Amit Shah, on January 8, directed security forces to intensify operations targeting terrorist infrastructure and terror financing in a “mission mode.”

Mohan had arrived in Jammu on Wednesday afternoon on a two-day visit and proceeded directly to the convention centre to chair a high-level meeting, officials said.

It was attended by Intelligence Bureau Director Tapan Deka, BSF Director General Praveen Kumar, CRPF chief G P Singh, Jammu and Kashmir DGP Nalin Prabhat, and senior military, police, civil, and intelligence officers.

Security forces are actively engaged in extensive combing and counter-terror operations in the forest belts of the Jammu division, where nearly three dozen terrorists, mostly Pakistani nationals, are believed to be hiding after infiltrating into the region over the past few years (since 2021 in some cases).

According to recent estimates from senior Jammu and Kashmir police officials, there are nearly three dozen (40–50) active terrorists in the UT, with intelligence indicating that around 60–70 more potential terrorists are poised to infiltrate the region.
