Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports, Mansukh Mandaviya, has pledged to enhance sports infrastructure in Manipur, recognized as a powerhouse of athletics in India.
During his two-day visit to the northeastern state, Mandaviya toured Loktak Lake on Sunday and engaged with young athletes training in rowing, canoeing, and kayaking at the Regional Water Sports Complex in Takmu.
The minister’s visit came as a response to concerns raised by athletes about the inadequacies of equipment and facilities at the complex.
In a bid to address these issues, Mandaviya outlined the Centre's initiative to inaugurate the National Sports University in Imphal by October 2025 and improve infrastructure at the Regional Water Sports Complex.
Asnikumar Singh, Chairperson of the Loktak Development Authority and president of the Bishnupur District Canoeing & Kayaking Association, presented a memorandum to Mandaviya detailing the challenges faced by athletes.
He also requested support for sponsoring a national championship for canoeing, kayaking, and rowing at Loktak Lake later this year.
The minister expressed commitment to upgrading existing sports facilities, suggesting the possibility of enhancing the SAI Centre of Excellence in Water Sports or converting the complex into a campus for the National Sports University, Imphal.
He highlighted the significance of nurturing the potential of young athletes from Manipur, particularly in water sports, and expressed optimism for their future achievements.
Accompanied by state government representatives, Mandaviya also took a boat ride across Loktak Lake. During the excursion, he underscored the need to preserve the lake as a natural treasure.
He assured support from relevant ministries and agencies for the rejuvenation, conservation, and sustainable development of Loktak Lake, which is vital for the livelihoods of local communities.
