West Bengal Governor C. V. Ananda Bose asserted on Thursday that alterations in political leadership should not hinder the academic operations of universities, whether at the state or national level.
Speaking at the certification and medal distribution ceremony at Calcutta University, where he also serves as Chancellor, Bose emphasised the importance of maintaining educational continuity amid political fluctuations.
“Political parties come and go, but universities should go on forever,” he remarked, reinforcing that institutions like Calcutta University must remain dedicated to their mission of excellence regardless of changes in governance.
Bose highlighted the necessity of harmonising “mission, vision, and action” to advance universities on their quest for academic distinction. He noted that the journey of knowledge is unending, stating, “There is no full stop for education for anybody.”
He observed a significant transformation in India’s standing within the global education community, asserting, “The perception has undergone a sea change in recent years,” with Indian students and institutions now recognised among the best.
The Governor also touched upon the advantages of the New Education Policy, 2020, outlining its potential to enhance educational frameworks across the country.
In a separate discussion with reporters, Bose expressed concern over the “growing incidents of starvation,” referring to the recent death of a migrant labourer from Purba Medinipur district due to starvation in Tamil Nadu.
He called on civil society and the government to address such critical issues, especially regarding the hardships faced by the state’s migrant workers.
Regarding ongoing protests by junior doctors, he expressed optimism that the state would find a resolution, asserting, “It is the duty of the state.”
