Tension flared up in Beldanga area of Murshidabad district on Saturday morning, following reports of a migrant worker being brutally assaulted in another state.
Angry locals blocked National Highway 12 at Barua More, bringing traffic to a standstill, while several shops near the railway gate were vandalised during the protest.
According to local sources, Anisur Rahman, a resident of Makdampur in Beldanga, had gone to Bihar four days ago to work as a street vendor. He was staying in a rented accommodation along with seven others from the same area. It is alleged that Anisur was severely beaten by some locals there on suspicion of being a Bangladeshi national. His companions were also attacked when they tried to intervene.
Despite his critical condition, Anisur managed to return home on Friday night. However, on Saturday morning, when arrangements were being made to take him to hospital, news of the assault spread rapidly, triggering protests across the area. His injuries are stated to be serious.

This latest incident comes close on the heels of another unrest in Beldanga on Friday, following the mysterious death of a migrant worker in Jharkhand. Alauddin Sheikh, a resident of the Sujapur–Kumarpur Gram Panchayat area, had also gone to Jharkhand to work as a street vendor. On Thursday, his family was informed that his body was found hanging in his rented room there.
After Alauddin’s body was brought back to the village on Friday, residents staged a blockade of National Highway 12 and also disrupted railway services, demanding strict punishment for those responsible.
The area witnessed intense agitation, prompting the deployment of a large police force. The situation was brought under temporary control through police intervention.
However, before tensions could fully subside, news of Anisur Rahman’s assault in Bihar reignited anger among the residents. From early Saturday morning, people once again took to the streets, leading to renewed clashes and heightened tension in Beldanga. Heavy police presence has been deployed in the area to prevent further escalation, and authorities are monitoring the situation closely. Investigations into both incidents are ongoing.
