Goa grappled with unexpected rainfall on Saturday, resulting in waterlogging across various areas and disrupting traffic, officials reported.

While offering relief from the scorching summer temperatures, the downpour posed challenges for residents and authorities alike.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), thunderstorms, lightning, and wind gusts of 40-50 kilometres per hour are anticipated in numerous locations in Goa over the weekend and into the beginning of the week.

Additionally, the IMD has issued warnings of "heavy to very heavy rainfall" at isolated spots during this period.

Although sporadic light rains are forecasted to persist until April 22, the weather is expected to transition to dry conditions until April 26, as indicated on the IMD's website.

"Saturday morning saw streets inundated with water due to the rains, with the main market area in the capital city of Panaji, particularly hard-hit," officials remarked.

Rohit Monserratte, the Mayor of the Corporation of the City of Panaji, attributed the waterlogging to ongoing Smart City projects in various parts of the city.

The Imagine Panaji Smart City Development Corporation Limited, a state-owned entity, spearheads Smart City initiatives in Goa as part of the nationwide Smart City Mission, aimed at enhancing urban infrastructure across India.

"We had taken measures to clear the drains, but sediment from Smart City projects hindered our efforts. It is imperative for the Smart City authorities to address these flood-prone areas. We have engaged in discussions with the Managing Director of Smart City. While surface treatments have been applied to the roads, the primary drainage systems remain uncleared," Monserratte expressed.

Smart City initiatives involve the implementation of advanced technologies and innovative solutions to improve urban living standards.

However, the integration of these initiatives with existing infrastructure poses logistical challenges, as evidenced by the recent bout of waterlogging following the rainfall.
