The size of Uttar Pradesh’s electorate has surged by more than 84 lakh, bringing the total number of eligible voters to a staggering 13.39 crore. This update follows the conclusion of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR), the final results of which were unveiled on Friday by the state’s Chief Electoral Officer, Navdeep Rinwa.

Speaking at the Lok Bhawan Media Centre, Rinwa detailed an exhaustive 166-day exercise that began in October last year and wrapped up on April 10. The project was a massive logistical undertaking, involving over 1.7 lakh Booth Level Officers and thousands of supervisors across all 75 districts and 403 assembly constituencies. It would appear that the exercise has proved worthwhile from the standpoint of inclusion, since whereas the provisional roll contained about 12.55 crore voters, the total number in the final figures represents an impressive boost to the state’s electoral presence.

Among the most remarkable trends identified from the latest set of figures is the emergence of the youth vote. The number of voters in the 18–19 age bracket has jumped from a mere 3.3 lakh in the draft stages to over 17.6 lakh in the final count. There is also a positive trend in the gender ratio, which has climbed from 824 to 834 female voters for every 1,000 males. Of the total 13.39 crore voters, men account for approximately 54 per cent, while women make up 45.46 per cent.

On a regional level, the gains were not spread evenly. The maximum growth was witnessed in Prayagraj, which gained an additional 3.3 lakh people, with Lucknow and Bareilly coming right after. The industrial and urban cities such as Ghaziabad have also witnessed a considerable rise. According to Rinwa, the success of the exercise was due to the perfect coordination between the election authorities, political parties, and the media, which is an important achievement as Uttar Pradesh gears up for another round of elections.
