Lucknow police have arrested Rishabh Singh, an aide to an ambulance driver, in connection with the alleged sexual harassment of a woman and the subsequent death of her husband.
The arrest was made on Thursday night at Matiyari crossing, following a tip-off. Singh, 21, a resident of Ayodhya, is accused alongside the still-at-large ambulance driver, Sarju Tiwari.
Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (North) Jitendra Kumar Dubey confirmed the arrest, stating, “The accused helper of the ambulance, Rishabh, has been arrested. Our teams are trying to arrest the accused driver.”
The ambulance involved in the incident has also been seized.
According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) North Abhijith R Shankar, Singh was identified and apprehended based on ongoing investigations. The police have formed three teams to locate Tiwari, who remains at large.
The FIR was registered on September 4 at the Ghazipur (Indiranagar) police station.
The distressing incident began when the woman, who had been caring for her husband at a hospital in Ghazipur (Indiranagar), sought an early discharge due to financial strain and hired the ambulance for their return to Siddharth Nagar.
On August 29, the situation deteriorated when the ambulance driver coerced the woman into the front seat allegedly to physically abuse her.
Singh and the driver then subjected her to sexual harassment, removed her husband’s oxygen mask, and forcibly ejected him from the ambulance.
They also locked her brother in the driver’s cabin, stole Rs 10,000, her jewellery, Aadhaar card, and hospital documents.
Despite emergency intervention, her husband was transferred from Basti District Hospital to Gorakhpur Medical College, where he later died.
