Police have booked 27 individuals in Balrampur district, along the India-Nepal border in Uttar Pradesh, for allegedly possessing identity and citizenship documents of both countries and availing benefits under government welfare schemes, officials said.

Superintendent of Police Vikas Kumar stated that the action followed an inquiry initiated on the complaint of the District Election Officer-cum-District Magistrate. The probe revealed that several residents of Koilabas in Nepal's Dang district had used addresses in Balapur (Anwardih), Sheetalapur (Rizwan Gali) and the Tulsipur area of Balrampur to obtain Indian identity documents, including Aadhaar cards and voter identity cards.

According to the findings, the names of the accused were listed in the electoral rolls of both India and Nepal. During verification, police found several discrepancies in the records. One of the accused, Abdul Rahman, was found not to be residing at the listed address in Balapur (Anwardih), while another, Abdul Aziz Siddiqui, had died a few months ago. Despite this, their names continued to appear in official records, raising further concerns, Kumar said.

The preliminary investigation suggests that the accused allegedly secured inclusion in the electoral rolls of both countries and obtained Aadhaar cards and other Indian identity documents, which were then used to claim benefits under various government welfare schemes.

Police said the case involves the alleged misuse of official documents, concealment of identity and submission of false information in government records. A case has been registered at Jarwa Police Station under the relevant legal provisions, and a detailed investigation is underway.

Authorities are verifying the documents and cross-checking records with the concerned departments. Further legal action will be taken based on the outcome of the investigation, the SP added.
