Police initiated an inquiry into charges that a police sub-inspector attacked an Indian Army officer in Lucknow, officials confirmed on Saturday. The Army strongly condemned the incident, with senior officials approaching the Lucknow Police Commissioner to insist that immediate and unbiased action be taken.
The Surya Command of the Indian Army based in Lucknow issued a statement on their official 'X' handle on Friday, reading, "A case of misconduct against an Army officer on duty in Lucknow is being pursued with highest seriousness. An FIR has been registered immediately, and CCTV footage has been analysed." The statement went on to add that Major General Salil Seth, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of Madhya Uttar Pradesh Sub Area (MUPSA), in addition to the station commander, had approached Lucknow Police Commissioner Amrendra K Sengar to seek a quick and fair investigation.
Lieutenant Colonel Anand Prakash Suman lodged a complaint describing the incident. He is posted at the NCC Directorate Bihar & Jharkhand in Patna. He claimed that while driving his vehicle at the Telibagh crossing on his way to the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences, a policeman, driving on the wrong side of the road, started abusing him verbally and slapped him as soon as he opened his car window.

According to Lt Col Suman's complaint, police lodged a case against an unidentified person under sections 281 (rash or negligent driving), 125(a) (act endangering life or personal safety of others), 115(2) (voluntarily causing hurt), and 352 (intentional insult with intent to provoke a breach of peace) of the Bhartiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS).
Assistant Commissioner of Police (East) Rishabh Runwal informed the media on Saturday that the case is being investigated thoroughly.
"The incident is being probed on a priority basis and all the details of the case are being investigated. Further action will be taken based on the outcome of the probe," the ACP said.
