In a cross-border incident, two American nationals, and a woman originally from Nepal, were detained by authorities in Bihar’s Madhubani district while attempting to cross into Nepal without valid travel documents.
Police have identified the detained pair as residents of California, USA.
The arrest took place near the Betaunha border outpost on Saturday, within the jurisdiction of Jainagar police station, where personnel from the 48th battalion of the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) intercepted the Americans.
According to Deputy Superintendent of Police Ankur Kumar, “They were held by the SSB personnel as they were trying to cross over to Nepal without valid travel documents. The arrested US nationals are a couple. The woman, born in Nepal, married the man and gained US citizenship.”
Two local residents, also taken into custody, are accused of providing logistical assistance to the couple during their stay in the Jainagar area near the India-Nepal border.
The couple underwent interrogation by police, SSB personnel, and officials from other agencies to ascertain details of their travel history and intentions.
“The police registered a case and arrested both US nationals. Two locals were also apprehended for providing them with logistical support,” Deputy SP Kumar confirmed.
Further investigation into the circumstances surrounding the border-crossing attempt is underway.
