Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Saturday strongly condemned the US-Israel military campaign against Iran, describing it as an “unjust war” imposed on the Iranian people that must end as soon as possible.
He criticised the stated aim of toppling the current regime and replacing it with a “puppet or rubber stamp government”, asserting that neither the United States nor Israel has any right to decide Iran’s leadership.
Omar emphasised, “At the end of the day, what we want is peace. We want this unjust war that has been imposed on the people of Iran to stop. As I have said time and again, America and Israel don’t get to decide who the leader of Iran is. Israel and the US don’t get to decide who the Supreme Leader is.”
He further stated that the assassinated Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei was not merely Iran’s leader but “an acknowledged religious leader for the entire Muslim Ummah”.
Omar warned that the actions of the United States and Israel in Iran would have far-reaching ripple effects on global geopolitics, already visible in the sharp rise in oil and gas prices worldwide.
He welcomed Iran’s decision to allow Indian ships to carry fuel through the Strait of Hormuz while keeping it closed to US allies, noting, “Anything that allows us to keep our prices low is a good thing, whether that means buying oil from Russia or being able to transport our gas and fuel supplies through the strait, which otherwise is closed to everybody else. It is good for us.”
The Chief Minister reiterated that the people of Iran alone have the right to choose their leadership and that external forces must respect that sovereignty.
His remarks come amid continued escalation in the region, with the conflict now in its third week and widespread economic fallout being felt across Asia and beyond.
