Residents in the Baharagora block of East Singhbhum district in Jharkhand were gripped by fear after an unexploded bomb was unearthed from beneath sand and soil along the Subernarekha river bank near the Panipara–Nagudsaai area on Friday.
Locals reportedly noticed the suspicious object on Wednesday and promptly informed the authorities, triggering swift action by the administration.
According to reports initial examination indicates that the object is roughly the size of a gas cylinder and carries markings reading “AN-M64 500 lb… American… unexploded,” suggesting it is a US-made 500-pound (around 227 kg) bomb that has remained inactive for years.
As a safety measure, police have warned local residents to keep a safe distance from the bomb and avoid touching or disturbing the object under any circumstances.
The district administration has sought expert assistance from the Kalaikunda Air Force Station to handle the situation. Meanwhile, the site has been sealed off, and movement in the vicinity has been restricted to ensure public safety.
Authorities suspect that the bomb could be linked to an old military aircraft crash reported in the Mahuldangri area, with the possibility that it fell into the river during the incident and remained buried over time.
Considering the explosive’s magnitude and potential danger, officials have termed the situation extremely sensitive. Security arrangements have been intensified, and strict vigilance is being maintained until specialists assess and safely defuse the device.
