A 24-hour avalanche warning has been issued for areas above 3,000 meters in Chamoli, Rudraprayag, and Pithoragarh districts of Uttarakhand.
The Defence Geoinformatics Research Establishment (DGRE), based in Chandigarh, issued an 'orange' alert for these areas, while a 'yellow' alert has been given for Uttarkashi district, which borders Chamoli and Rudraprayag. In Himachal Pradesh, the districts of Chamba, Lahaul Spiti, and Kullu Kinnaur are also under an 'orange' alert.
A 'yellow' alert has been issued for parts of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, including Ganderbal, Baramulla, Kupwara, Rajouri, and Poonch in Jammu and Kashmir and Kargil in Ladakh.
This warning comes a week after an avalanche buried a Border Roads Organisation (BRO) labourers' camp in Chamoli. Nearly 60 people were in the camp at the time, and eight lost their lives.
The camp was located at 3,200 meters above sea level, where temperatures dropped to -12 degrees Celsius, making rescue efforts difficult. More than 200 personnel from state and central disaster response teams, along with the Army and Air Force, worked tirelessly to rescue the trapped workers.
By nightfall on February 28, 33 workers were rescued, followed by 17 more on March 1.
Despite the rescue efforts, the region remains covered in at least three feet of snow. The affected districts are close to the Indo-Tibetan border, where the Army and Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) have outposts, increasing the risk of avalanches.
