Amid rising global concerns about the HMPV virus (Human Metapneumovirus), Uttarakhand's Directorate of Medical Health and Family Welfare has issued an advisory to tackle the potential spread of respiratory diseases, including HMPV.

While no cases of HMPV virus India have been reported in the state yet, healthcare facilities are being strengthened to manage any possible HMPV outbreak.

Understanding the HMPV virus

The HMPV virus is a respiratory virus that spreads more during the winter months. Its symptoms are similar to the common cold, including coughing, fever, and nasal congestion.

In severe cases, it can lead to complications such as pneumonia, especially in vulnerable groups like children, the elderly, and those with pre-existing health conditions. However, the infection usually resolves on its own within 3-5 days.

Health Department's Advisory

The Directorate of Health has urged district magistrates and chief medical officers to enhance readiness for a potential HMPV outbreak.

The guidelines emphasise:

  • Ensuring adequate isolation beds, oxygen facilities, ICU units, ventilators, and essential supplies like PPE kits, N-95 masks, and medications for HMPV treatment.
  • Monitoring patients with HMPV symptoms or other respiratory illnesses like influenza, ILI (Influenza-Like Illness), and SARI (Severe Acute Respiratory Illness).
  • Reporting cases through the Integrated Health Information Platform (IHIP) to facilitate timely action.

Preparedness for HMPV cases

Hospitals and healthcare centers have been instructed to stock essential materials and ensure the availability of trained staff. The Rapid Response Team (RRT) under the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP) will continuously monitor unusual situations involving virus HMPV or similar illnesses and take immediate control measures.

Public guidelines to prevent HMPV spread

To reduce the risk of contracting or spreading the HMPV virus, the public is advised to:

  • Cover their nose and mouth with a tissue or handkerchief while coughing or sneezing.
  • Avoid crowded places and maintain good hand hygiene with soap and water.
  • Stay hydrated and eat nutritious food to boost immunity.
  • Refrain from touching the face frequently and avoid close contact with symptomatic individuals.
  • Seek medical advice promptly if experiencing symptoms like cough, fever, or difficulty breathing.

Additionally, reusing tissues, shaking hands, and spitting in public places should be avoided. Self-medication is discouraged unless prescribed by a doctor.

Special focus on vulnerable groups

The advisory stresses providing extra care to children, older adults, and individuals with chronic health issues, as they are at higher risk of complications from HMPV causes or other respiratory infections.

With these measures in place, Uttarakhand aims to ensure public safety and readiness against any HMPV virus news or updates regarding the disease.
