Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami  reviewed the progress of the Jal Jeevan Mission and directed officials to ensure 100 per cent coverage under the ‘Har Ghar Jal’ programme.

The review meeting was held at the Secretariat. Officials discussed the status of water supply projects, tap water connections in rural areas, verification of connections, water quality, funding and the operation and maintenance of completed schemes.

According to the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO), Dhami asked officials to provide tap water connections to all eligible rural households within the set deadline. He said the Jal Jeevan Mission should not be judged only by the number of connections provided. The main goal, he said, is to ensure that every household gets regular, sufficient, safe and clean drinking water. He also called for physical verification of completed projects.

Dhami directed officials to expedite work on all ongoing and pending drinking water projects and complete them within the specified timeline. He asked District Magistrates to work with the departments concerned and resolve any hurdles without delay.

The Chief Minister also asked officials to regularly monitor both the physical progress and expenditure of every water supply project. The meeting also focused on protecting and reviving drinking water sources in the hill districts. Dhami stressed the need for rainwater harvesting and groundwater recharge.

He asked officials to put systems in place in every district to quickly address technical problems and ensure long-term maintenance of water schemes.

Dhami further directed officials to prepare clear district-wise targets and deadlines and assign responsibility for each project. He said accountability should be fixed on the concerned agencies and officials if projects face avoidable delays.

Officials informed the meeting that 15,540 of the 16,555 schemes taken up under the Jal Jeevan Mission have been completed. The overall progress in the state stands at 92.46 per cent, while work on 1,015 schemes is still underway.

The review showed that 14.20 lakh of Uttarakhand’s 14.48 lakh rural households have received tap water connections. Officials also said that tap water supply has been verified in 9,796 of the 14,979 villages across the state.
