News Arena Network - Dehradun - UPDATED: December 21, 2024, 03:45 PM - 2 min read

The landslide in Dharchula forced the closure of the Dharchula-Tawaghat National Highway.

A hill along the Dharchula-Tawaghat National Highway in Uttarakhand collapsed due to a landslide on late Friday evening, blocking the road near Zero Point.

Dozens of vehicles were stuck on both sides, but there were no reports of injuries or people trapped under the debris. Witnesses said no vehicles were passing at the time of the collapse, preventing a major accident.

Uttarakhand has become increasingly vulnerable to landslides due to heavy construction work. This year, at least 84 people lost their lives during the monsoon season. Between June 23 and July 10, the state faced 17 landslides, according to reports.

By the end of the monsoon, 292 more landslides were recorded.

In total, 84 people were killed and 28 went missing due to the landslides. Districts including Almora, Chamoli, Champawat, Dehradun, Haridwar, Nainital, Pauri Garhwal, Pithoragarh, Rudraprayag, Tehri, Udham Singh Nagar, and Uttarkashi were severely affected this year.

The report also revealed that 2024 had the highest number of landslides since 2018. In 2023, the state saw 1,100 landslides, followed by 245 in 2022, 354 in 2021, 328 in 2020, 254 in 2019, and 2016 in 2018. Between 1988 and 2023, there were 12,319 landslides in the state.
