A private hospital nurse in Uttarakhand’s Rudrapur was brutally raped and murdered, with her body found in a vacant plot in a nearby Uttar Pradesh village, police said on Friday.
The victim, who had been missing since July 30, was discovered in Dibdiba village on August 8 with severe facial mutilation, according to Superintendent of Police Manjunath TC.
The nurse, who had been returning from work, was reported missing by her sister on July 31. An investigation was launched after the complaint, leading to the recovery of her body.
Police traced her using CCTV footage and mobile phone location data, which pointed to the crime scene near her home in Uttar Pradesh's Rampur district, adjacent to Uttarakhand’s Udham Singh Nagar.
The accused, identified as Dharmendra, a labourer from Gadarpur, Uttarakhand, was arrested in Rajasthan on August 13.
Originally from Bareilly district in Uttar Pradesh, Dharmendra confessed during interrogation that he had followed the nurse with the intention of robbing her.
After forcing her into a secluded area, he strangled her with a scarf, raped her, and then further mutilated her face with a stone.
The shocking incident has drawn attention amid ongoing protests over a similar case in Kolkata, where a trainee doctor was allegedly raped and murdered at a state-run medical college.
