Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has approved a proposal to commemorate the 350th martyrdom day of Guru Tegh Bahadur with grandeur and reverence across the state, an official statement stated.
The announcement was first made by CM Dhami on May 22, 2025, during the ceremonial reopening of the portals of Shri Hemkund Sahib, a revered Sikh pilgrimage site located in Rishikesh. Following the formal approval by the Chief Minister Dham, the state government will now organise a series of commemorative events to honour the legacy of the ninth Sikh Guru.
Guru Tegh Bahadur, born in 1621 in Amritsar to Guru Hargobind and Mata Nanki, is respected for his spiritual teachings and his supreme sacrifice to protect religious freedom and uphold human dignity. His martyrdom remains a defining moment in the history of resistance against tyranny and oppression.
The upcoming celebrations aim to highlight Guru Tegh Bahadur’s enduring message of courage, compassion, and justice. Officials noted that the Guru’s teachings transcend religious boundaries and continue to inspire values of peace, tolerance, and equality in contemporary society.
“In today’s world of rising conflict and division, Guru Tegh Bahadur’s life serves as a timeless reminder of the importance of shared humanity, respect for diversity, and the protection of fundamental rights,” the statement read.
Through this statewide initiative, Uttarakhand seeks to honour the Guru’s legacy and spread his universal message of love, harmony, and moral courage.
