In its preliminary report, the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) said that the helicopter that crashed near Gangnani in Uttarkashi on May 8 hit an overhead fibre cable while trying to make an emergency landing.
The BELL 407 chopper had taken off earlier that day and started descending about 20 minutes into the flight. The 59-year-old pilot, who had over 6,160 hours of flying experience, was attempting to land on the Uttarkashi-Gangotri National Highway.
Tragically, the helicopter’s main rotor struck a cable running along the road, which led to the fatal crash.
Six people, including the pilot, lost their lives in the accident. One person was seriously injured. The investigation into the incident is still ongoing.
