The cold wave conditions across Jammu and Kashmir have intensified, with minimum temperatures plummeting to minus 3.2 degrees in the summer capital Srinagar on Sunday.
An intense cold wave has gripped the Kashmir Valley, with MeT forecasting colder days ahead in the coming weeks.
The majority of hill stations received early snowfall, causing temperatures to plummet by several degrees across the plains of the UT.
Jammu city once again remained the warmest place with 10.0 degrees, while South Kashmir’s Shopian remained the coldest part with minus 5.1 degrees recorded on Sunday.
While daytime temperatures have remained relatively moderate, night-time temperatures have plummeted below freezing point in a few places; the mercury has recorded a sharp dip across all weather stations.
According to the MeT officials, “The summer capital recorded a minimum of minus 3.2 degrees Celsius on Sunday, accompanied by cold northerly winds.”
In central Kashmir, temperatures fell below freezing point in Budgam and Ganderbal, recording a sharp decline in minimum temperatures on Sunday.
Meanwhile, South Kashmir’s Shopian, Pulwama, Kulgam, and Anantnag also witnessed a sharp dip in minimum temperatures ranging from minus 4.5 degrees to minus 5.1 degrees.
Qazigund, known as the gateway to Kashmir, also recorded minus 2.8 degrees, while several other weather stations across north Kashmir, including Baramulla, Bandipora, and Kupwara, witnessed chilly night temperatures due to their slightly elevated positions in the valley.
In the Jammu division, the weather remained relatively moderate, with Jammu city recording 10.0 degrees Celsius, while Banihal, Kishtwar, Bhaderwah, and Batote also experienced slightly milder weather conditions.
Additionally, the MeT office has predicted mainly cold but dry weather conditions to continue for the next week, with no significant prediction of rain or snowfall expected over the plains across Jammu and Kashmir.
