Cold conditions tightened their grip on Kashmir as minimum temperatures dipped further below freezing, and a thick fog covered most parts of the Valley, officials said on Wednesday.
Srinagar recorded a low of minus 4.4°C on Tuesday night, dropping from minus 2.5°C the previous night, according to officials.
A dense layer of fog wrapped Srinagar and other parts of the Valley, especially the areas near water bodies. Shopian town in south Kashmir was the coldest in the valley, with temperatures falling to minus 5.9°C, officials said.
Qazigund, the gateway to the valley, recorded a low of minus 3.6°C, while north Kashmir’s Kupwara saw the mercury settle at minus 4.1°C.
South Kashmir’s Kokernag recorded a minimum temperature of minus 1.2°C, officials added.
Pahalgam in south Kashmir recorded a low of minus 4.6°C, while the Gulmarg skiing resort in north Kashmir reported minus 2.6°C.
The weather department said the weather is expected to stay dry till Wednesday, though a short spell of light snow may occur at a few higher-altitude spots late Thursday night or early Friday.
The MeT Office said the weather will remain generally dry on December 6 and 7, but another brief spell of light snowfall is likely at isolated higher reaches on December 8.
