Jammu and Kashmir People’s Democratic Party president Mehbooba Mufti on Tuesday accused the BJP of double standards, claiming it welcomes sheikhs from the Middle East while remaining silent—or even pleased—when the shrine of Sufi poet Baba Bulleh Shah is vandalised by miscreants.

In a post on X, Mehbooba Mufti wrote, “BJP leaders pose in mosques abroad and roll out red carpets for Middle Eastern sheikhs. But back home, they watch with glee as the shrine of Sufi poet Baba Bulleh Shah is vandalised.”

The former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir described the Central government’s approach as deliberate hypocrisy.

She added, “This hypocrisy is not accidental but deliberate. Destroying symbols of harmony is easier than answering for rising poverty, mass unemployment and a future stolen from the younger generation.”

Her remarks came in response to the vandalism of the revered Baba Bulleh Shah shrine in Mussoorie on January 24 by right-wing Hindu activists.

According to police, some individuals trespassed onto the shrine premises and damaged it. Mussoorie police have registered an FIR under relevant sections, and the matter is under investigation.

Officials said three individuals—Hariom, Shivayun, and Shraddha—have been identified and named in the FIR, while efforts are ongoing to identify others from video footage, whose names will also be added.

The FIR states that the accused, along with 25–30 unidentified persons, allegedly demolished parts of the shrine late on Saturday night using iron rods and hammers.

The mob also destroyed literature and religious books kept at the shrine during the incident.
