Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), the political party founded by actor Vijay, has moved the Supreme Court to challenge the Madras High Court order that constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the stampede in Karur, which tragically claimed 41 lives.
The apex court agreed to hear the plea on Friday, October 10th. A bench comprising Chief Justice BR Gavai and Justice K Vinod Chandran noted the submissions made by a lawyer for the party, confirming the petition, filed through TVK’s secretary Aadhav Arjuna, would be listed for hearing.
TVK is seeking an independent investigation to be conducted under the supervision of the Supreme Court. The party contends that a fair and impartial probe would not be possible if the inquiry were handled solely by officers of the Tamil Nadu police.
This latest petition will be heard concurrently with an appeal filed earlier this week by BJP leader Uma Anandan, who is also challenging the High Court’s refusal to order a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiry into the September 27th tragedy.
The stampede, which also injured more than 60 people, occurred at Vijay's political rally. Police noted that the event saw an unexpected turnout, nearly three times the anticipated 10,000 participants. Authorities also attributed the tragedy partly to a seven-hour delay by the party chief in reaching the venue.
