Senior Congress leader P. Chidambaram on Thursday said that while he wished actor-turned-politician Vijay well, his political foray would not succeed, asserting that the INDIA alliance would emerge victorious in the upcoming elections.
Responding to Vijay’s recent claim that the electoral contest in Tamil Nadu would be only between his party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), and the DMK, Chidambaram dismissed the assertion. “My wishes to Vijay, but his attempts will not succeed,” he said, expressing strong confidence in the opposition bloc.
“Only the INDIA alliance will win and there is no doubt about it in my heart,” he added.
Chidambaram attributed the alliance’s confidence to its experience in electoral politics. “The INDIA alliance is very strong, has faced several elections and knows how to conduct election campaigns,” he said. While noting that outcomes depend on individual constituencies, he reiterated his belief that the alliance would ultimately prevail.
On the issue of seat-sharing, the former Union Minister declined to specify numbers, saying that decisions would be arrived at through mutual discussions among alliance partners. When asked how many seats the Congress intended to seek, he responded rhetorically, “How many seats do you think we can ask?”
Reacting to speculation that the Congress might seek around 40 seats, Chidambaram said such questions were routine. He emphasised that the final decision would rest with the leadership of the two parties.
“In the end, the seats will be decided by the DMK leader and the Congress leader. Anyone can express their opinion, but the decision is taken by the two leaders,” he said.
