In a decisive opening move hours after being sworn in, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay, has ordered the immediate closure of 717 state-run liquor outlets. The directive targets Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation (Tasmac) shops situated near sensitive public zones, including places of worship, schools, and transport hubs.
Under the new mandate, authorities have a fortnight to shutter any outlet operating within a 500-metre radius of a temple, mosque, church, college, or bus stand. According to official figures, the state currently manages 4,765 retail shops; the 717 earmarked for closure comprise 276 sites near religious landmarks, 186 near educational centres, and 255 in the vicinity of bus stations.
The 51-year-old actor-turned-politician, whose Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) party recently surged to become the state's largest political force, is positioning the move as a vital social reform. By restricting the accessibility of alcohol in public areas, the administration hopes to address long-standing community concerns.
Vijay took his oath of office on Sunday following a landmark election that saw the TVK form Tamil Nadu’s first-ever coalition government, bolstered by the support of the Congress, the Left parties, the VCK, and the Muslim League.
