Keralam Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Friday urged people to observe a “self-lockdown” between 11 am and 3 pm as temperatures continue to rise across the state, following a heatwave warning issued by the India Meteorological Department.
Advising extreme caution, Vijayan asked residents to avoid stepping out during peak afternoon hours and minimise outdoor work unless absolutely necessary. Drawing a parallel with the COVID-19 period, he said people should treat the situation with similar seriousness to ensure their safety.
The advisory comes as the weather department flagged heatwave conditions in parts of Kerala, with districts such as Palakkad, Kollam and Thrissur recording temperatures above 40°C. High humidity levels have intensified the heat stress across several other regions as well.
Officials said the combined effect of high temperature and humidity has made conditions particularly uncomfortable, increasing the risk of heat-related illnesses. The state government has urged people to remain hydrated, avoid direct exposure to sunlight, and take adequate precautions.

The IMD had earlier warned of heatwave conditions in isolated pockets of Kerala on April 23 and 24, while also forecasting “hot and humid” weather in parts of Tamil Nadu, Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Coastal Karnataka over the coming days.
In its advisory, the weather department recommended the use of oral rehydration solutions (ORS) and traditional drinks such as lassi and buttermilk to maintain hydration levels. It also urged vulnerable groups, including the elderly, children and those with pre-existing health conditions, to take extra care.
At the same time, the IMD predicted a spell of relief in the form of scattered rainfall across parts of Kerala and neighbouring regions. Isolated to scattered light to moderate showers, accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds with speeds of 30–50 kmph, are likely between April 23 and 27.
Similar weather patterns are expected in Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam until April 25, and in Rayalaseema and Telangana on April 23 and 24. Lightning warnings have also been issued for parts of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal during the initial phase of the forecast period.
Authorities said the situation is being closely monitored, with the focus on minimising heat exposure risks and ensuring public safety as temperatures remain elevated across the region.
