Himachal Pradesh Urban Development Minister (PWD) Vikramaditya Singh on Monday visited Sunni in Shimla district to inspect the damaged Thali bridge. The bridge, which connects Shimla and Mandi, was badly affected by heavy rains.
The minister met local residents and assured them that the government would build a new double-lane bridge to restore safe connectivity. The PWD has been asked to find a suitable site between Gharat Nola and Ghanghar for the new bridge.
A committee will also conduct a structural audit of the old bridge to check if it can still be used for pedestrians. Singh said rising water levels from the dam had damaged the bridge and stressed the need for a stronger bridge.
Earlier, traffic on the Shimla–Mandi road at Sunni had come to a halt after a large section of the road sank into the Satluj river. The road width has now reduced to just 1.5 metres, making it unsafe for vehicular movement. The district administration has closed the stretch until further orders.
The alternate route via Thali bridge also remains shut after damage. With continuous rainfall, the Met department has issued a yellow alert for Shimla, Kullu, Mandi, Kangra, Chamba, Hamirpur, Bilaspur, Solan, and Sirmaur districts.
