A village sarpanch in Punjab was allegedly attacked with sharp-edged weapons and run over several times by a car, leading to his death, police said on Wednesday.
One person has been arrested, while five others have been booked in connection with the incident that took place in Anandgarh village on Tuesday night, police said.
Satpal, also known as Mintu, was the sarpanch of Anandgarh. Police said the attack began after a villager, Rohit, reached his house and told him that some men were chasing him and that he was scared for his safety.
Satpal allowed Rohit to stay inside his house. Shortly after, five to six men arrived at the house in a car. Three of them, who were carrying sharp-edged weapons, allegedly attacked Satpal, police said.
During the attack, the driver allegedly hit Satpal with the car, causing him to fall. The vehicle then ran over him two to three times. The attackers escaped when people from the area began gathering at the spot, leaving their weapons behind, police said.
Satpal's son Rahul was taking him to the hospital when another group of the accused reportedly stopped their car near Allahabad village. The attackers allegedly tried to pull open the driver's door and struck the vehicle with sharp-edged weapons. Rahul, however, managed to drive to the Sadar police station, police said.
With police assistance, Rahul then took his father to the hospital. However, doctors declared Satpal dead, police said.
Sadar Station House Officer, Sub-Inspector Baljinder Singh Malhi, said one accused has been arrested. Police teams are conducting raids to trace and arrest the other suspects, he added.
