A scandal has hit the Karnataka police department after the leak of a video allegedly showing Dr Ramachandra Rao, a DGP-rank IPS officer and father of gold smuggling accused Ranya Rao, in a series of intimate encounters inside his official chamber.
The footage, which has been circulating widely on social media, reportedly shows the senior officer hugging and kissing various women while in full uniform during duty hours.
What has shocked observers is that the visuals appear to have been recorded secretly from within the DGP’s office itself. The clips show different women visiting the office on separate occasions, with Rao engaging in intimate acts even as official business was ostensibly being conducted. While there are no claims of coercion or harassment, the blatant use of a high-security government office for such personal encounters has sparked a massive outcry over the total collapse of professional discipline.
The fallout has reached the very top of the state government. Sources indicate that Chief Minister Siddaramaiah was "furious" after being briefed on the situation and viewing the footage. He has, reportedly, demanded an immediate explanation from the Home Department on how such a breach of decorum could happen under the nose of the police establishment.
Dr Ramachandra Rao is currently embroiled in a gold smuggling case, has come out in his own defense, claiming the video is a hit job. Speaking to the media, the senior officer dismissed the footage as a fake. “This is a morphed video. People are targeting me,” he insisted, though he did not specify who might be behind the alleged fabrication.
With the state government under intense pressure from the opposition and the public, all eyes are now on whether the government will order a formal inquiry or place the senior IPS officer under immediate suspension pending a forensic check of the video.
