Voting commenced today for the first phase of Assam’s panchayat elections, which are being held in 14 districts across the state. Early morning scenes at polling stations revealed long queues as citizens exercised their democratic right.
The elections are being held in the districts of Sonitpur, Biswanath, Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Tinsukia, Dibrugarh, Sivasagar, Charaideo, Jorhat, Majuli, Golaghat, Cachar, Hailakandi, and Sribhumi. The Assam State Election Commission has ensured arrangements for a free and fair election, with security personnel deployed at each polling station to maintain order.
More than 1.80 crore voters, including 90.71 lakh male voters, 89.65 lakh female voters, and 408 others, will cast their votes in 25,007 polling stations across both phases of the election. The second phase will take place on 7 May in the remaining 13 districts, with votes being counted on 11 May.
Notably, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has already secured 37 Zila Parishad seats — 35 by the BJP and two by the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) — unopposed. The NDA has also won 288 Anchalik Panchayat seats — 259 by the BJP and 29 by the AGP — without any contest.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had expressed confidence earlier this month that the NDA was poised to sweep the panchayat polls in Assam.
“The NDA has already secured 37 Zila Parishad (35 BJP and 2 AGP) and 288 Anchalik Panchayat (259 BJP and 29 AGP) seats unopposed. This is a massive and unprecedented mandate in Assam's political history. It reflects the immense trust and overwhelming love that the people of Assam have for the NDA and for our Prime Minister, Narendra Modi,” Sarma had posted on X on 18 April.
The Assam CM further reiterated that the NDA is set for a landslide victory. “We are confident that when the final election results are declared, this tally will grow even more impressive. The NDA is all set to sweep the Panchayat elections in Assam,” he added.
The state election commission has deployed over 1.20 lakh polling personnel in addition to the security forces, ensuring the smooth and secure conduct of the elections.
