Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday announced that wages of tea garden workers will rise from March 1, while unveiling a series of policy measures covering investment, employment, and infrastructure ahead of the state assembly elections.

Addressing the Assam Assembly during the ongoing Budget Session, Sarma said the wage increase responds to long-standing demands from the tea sector.

On investment, the Chief Minister announced that 20 Japanese companies are scheduled to visit Jagiroad on February 28 to explore industrial opportunities, part of the government’s push to attract foreign investment and strengthen Assam’s manufacturing base.

Focusing on employment, Sarma pledged that his government, if re-elected, will provide 55,000 jobs within the first three years of the new term, specifically in the Education Department. In a pre-election announcement, he also declared that 5,000 appointments in the department will be made before the polls.

Projecting an ambitious economic vision, Sarma said, “Assam aims to become a Rs 10 lakh crore economy by 2028.” He added that the state’s economy has grown by 45 per cent over the past five years, positioning Assam among the fastest-growing states in the country.

On infrastructure, Sarma announced that the 150-megawatt Kapili Hydro Power Project will be inaugurated within 10 days. Work has also commenced on a 25-megawatt hydro project in Karbi Anglong, expanding the state’s renewable energy capacity.

The announcements form part of Sarma’s pre-election focus on welfare, employment, and economic growth, as elections for the 126-member Assam Assembly are expected in March-April.
