The Jammu and Kashmir legislative assembly speaker, Abdul Rahim Rather, said on Thursday that the Waqf bill passed by the Lok Sabha violates the right to religion guaranteed by the constitution of India.
Speaking to reporters here, Rather said that it infringes upon Article 25 of the Constitution of India.
“As far as this bill is concerned, it violates Article 25 of the Constitution of India, which guarantees the right to freedom of religion to people in the country."
He said, “Interfering in the personal laws of the people is not good,” nor in the spirit of the country.
Article 25 of the Constitution of India guarantees the freedom of religion to every individual. It ensures that all persons have the right to freedom of conscience and can freely profess, practice, and propagate their religion.

The controversial Waqf bill was passed in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday night after a rigorous 12-hour discussion.
While the ruling BJP, along with its partners, supported the bill, the India Bloc partners voiced strong opposition and voted unanimously against the bill.
Almost all regional political parties, including NC, PC, and PDP, voiced their opposition to the bill.
Meanwhile, the Leader of the opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, in his post on X, said, “The Waqf (Amendment) Bill is a weapon aimed at marginalising Muslims and usurping their personal laws and property rights.
This attack on the Constitution by the RSS, BJP and their allies is aimed at Muslims today but sets a precedent to target other communities in the future.
The Congress party strongly opposes this legislation, as it attacks the very idea of India and violates Article 25, the Right to Freedom of Religion.
