Tensions have flared in Tamil Nadu’s Vellore district after the state Waqf Board issued eviction notices to around 150 families in Kottukollai village, Anaikattu Taluk. The Board claims the entire village is Waqf property. The move has caused panic among locals, many of whom say they have lived there for generations.

The notice, issued by Syed Ali Sultan Shah, states that the land under survey number 330/1 belongs to a local Dargah. It orders all residents to vacate the land immediately.

Shocked by the notice, villagers staged a protest on 15 April outside the Vellore District Collector’s office. They urged the authorities to protect their homes and livelihood.

“We have lived here for four generations,” said one villager. “Our ancestors farmed this land. We even have patta documents issued by the government.”

Hindu Munnani leader Mahesh joined the protest. He demanded that the district administration respond. “If there’s a claim, it must be investigated properly. The government should give pattas to the people and ensure their safety,” he told reporters.

This is not the first such dispute. Similar land ownership issues involving the Waqf Board have emerged in Tamil Nadu in recent years. These cases are often complex and emotionally charged.

As of now, the district administration has not released an official statement. Villagers remain outside the Collector’s office, demanding written assurance. They want confirmation that they will not be removed from the land they call home.

The issue has sparked wider debate about property rights and the powers of religious boards. Residents say their only request is to live in peace, on land they believe is rightfully theirs.
