Amritpal Singh, the leader of Waris Punjab De, a Sikh-Volunteer political group based in Punjab, announced to contest the Lok Sabha elections from the Khadoor Sahib constituency of the state. The announcement comes on Wednesday.
Singh who currently is locked up in Assam's Dibrugarh jail will contest as an Independent candidate. Singh is lodged in jail under the National Security Act.
Amritpal Singh's lawyer, Rajdev Singh Khalsa, confirmed to The Indian Express that Amritpal Singh will run as an independent candidate.
"I am in Dibrugarh today. I met Amritpal Singh. He has confirmed to me that he will contest elections from Khadoor Sahib," said Khalsa.
According to the sources, a prominent party is considering offering support to Amritpal Singh from outside.
