Congress MP and Punjab Congress president Amrinder Singh Raja Warring criticised the possibility of a BJP-SAD alliance in Punjab. He said joining hands would not help either party and described the proposed tie-up as ineffective.

 

Warring said both the BJP and Shiromani Akali Dal are currently struggling to retain their political position in Punjab. He said the Akali Dal once raised issues linked to Punjab’s interests, but claimed that both parties are now mainly focused on protecting their political existence.

Warring also said Punjab voters have moved beyond the traditional influence of these parties. He claimed that a fresh alliance between the BJP and SAD would not have much impact on the electorate.

 

He added that people would not forgive either party, whether they joined hands or adopted another strategy. According to Warring, neither BJP nor SAD would gain politically from such a partnership.

 

Congress MP Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa described a possible BJP-SAD tie-up as an “unholy alliance”. He said the combination had been defeated earlier and claimed that Congress would defeat it again.

 

Meanwhile, BJP MP Ashok Kumar Mittal rejected speculation about a possible alliance. He described the meeting between SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal and Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a routine interaction.

 

Mittal said the Prime Minister regularly meets leaders from different political parties to discuss issues concerning individual states. He said this is particularly important in a border state like Punjab.

 

Mittal said meetings between the Prime Minister and political leaders should not automatically be viewed as signs of an alliance. He said leaders from different parties are often consulted on Punjab-related matters, including politics, security and the drug problem. He added that there was no clear basis for the alliance speculation.

 

The BJP MP acknowledged that the two parties have been allies in the past and have formed governments together on several occasions. However, he said the current political situation does not suggest that a BJP-SAD alliance is likely at present.
