Police in Panchkula on Tuesday used water cannon on Youth Congress workers during a protest, when they tried to cross barricades and ‘gherao’ the Haryana Public Service Commission (HPSC) office.

The Congress and its youth wing alleged that the BJP government had failed to safeguard the interests of Haryana’s youth. Following these allegations, they decided to gherao the HPSC office.

Congress leader and Rohtak MP Deepender Singh Hooda also joined the protest along with other party workers. He was detained for some time by the police when demonstrators attempted to march towards the HPSC office in Panchkula.

Ambala MP Varun Chaudhary, Indian Youth Congress president Udai Bhanu Chib and Haryana Youth Congress president Nishit Kataria also participated in the protest. They were also detained by the police for some time.

The Haryana Youth Congress announced the 'gherao' alleging that candidates from outside the state were getting a disproportionate share of government jobs in the state. They further claimed that the HPSC has not been able to fill all the advertised posts.

The Panchkula Police had put up heavy barricades around the HPSC office to stop the protesters. When Youth Congress workers tried to break through the barricades, the police used water cannons to disperse them.

Speaking to media, Hooda alleged that many positions are being left vacant, and those that are being filled are going to candidates from outside the state. “We are here to protect the interests of Haryana’s youth,” he said. Chaudhary said the HPSC has turned into a “rejection commission for Haryana youth". He alleged that the BJP government in the state had failed to protect the interests of young people.
