In a fresh twist to the ongoing water-sharing conflict, the Punjab government has filed a review petition in the High Court, challenging the May 6 order concerning the water release by the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB).
In its petition, the state has accused BBMB of illegally releasing water from the Nangal Dam and of presenting misleading information to the court on crucial aspects of the case. The legal action comes amid ongoing protests led by Punjab Education Minister Harjot Bains, where Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) workers continue their sit-in (dharna) against the BBMB at the Nangal Dam site. The Punjab government contends that the additional 4,500 cusecs of water released earlier this month was not meant for drinking purposes and exceeded Haryana’s allocated quota.
The Punjab government argues that BBMB's actions violate established legal and procedural protocols and that the board failed to consult the state before executing the water release. Through the review petition, Punjab seeks to overturn or amend the court’s earlier decision as it steps up its legal and political efforts to assert its rights over water management.
Officials reiterated the state's firm commitment to protecting Punjab’s rightful share of water and emphasised that no agency should bypass due legal processes in such critical matters of public interest.
