At least 148 individuals have lost their lives, and more than 200 have been injured in the extensive landslides that struck the northern Kerala district of Wayanad a day ago. Officials stated on Wednesday that these numbers are anticipated to rise as rescuers continue to clear debris.

The landslides that affected the Mundakkai and Chooralmala areas of the district left over 180 people missing and destroyed more than 300 houses.

Collaborative rescue teams, including the Army, Navy, and NDRF, are actively searching for survivors. They are removing debris and accessing the remains of homes destroyed or buried under mud in the landslides.

The landslides took place between 2 am and 4.10 am on Tuesday, surprising sleeping residents and causing a high number of casualties.

The Wayanad district administration reported late Tuesday night that approximately 30 body parts were found in Nilmabur and Meppadi.

Devastating landslides, caused by heavy rains, struck the scenic villages of Mundakkai, Chooralmala, Attamala, and Noolpuzha early Tuesday morning, resulting in death, destruction, and hopelessness.
