Suspended Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLA from Bharatpur, Humayun Kabir, may face action from the West Bengal Assembly Speaker following the launch of his new political outfit, the Janata Unnayan Party. On Tuesday, Speaker Biman Banerjee said Kabir could be summoned to clarify his current party affiliation.
The Speaker said that the TMC had earlier suspended Humayun Kabir on charges of indiscipline, and all relevant documents in this regard had already been submitted to the Assembly. However, Kabir has not officially informed the Assembly about the formation of his new party, which he announced on Monday at a public meeting in Murshidabad.
“Since he has not intimated the Assembly about his new political party, he may be called to clarify his position,” Banerjee said. He also added that if any complaint is filed under the anti-defection law, it would be examined as per rules.
On Monday, Kabir formally launched the Janata Unnayan Party in Murshidabad, unveiling its yellow, green and white party flag and releasing the party manifesto. In a move that surprised many, he also announced candidates for several constituencies and claimed that no government would be formed in West Bengal after the 2026 Assembly elections without his party’s support.
Earlier, Kabir had asserted that his party would contest 135 seats in the 2026 polls, primarily in minority-dominated areas of the state. He further claimed that the Janata Unnayan Party would win at least 90 seats and emerge as a ‘kingmaker’ in state politics.
Even as reactions to these claims continue, Kabir now faces fresh pressure with the possibility of being summoned by the Assembly Speaker, adding a new dimension to the unfolding political developments.
