The West Bengal unit of the Congress on Wednesday started a sit-in, scheduled to be a two-day affair, in Esplanade area of Kolkata, demanding speedy justice for the RG Kar Hospital rape-murder victim.

Newly appointed West Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee president Subhankar Sarkar and former Bengal chief Adhir Chowdhury took part in the dharna along with many women and men party workers.

Street plays were organised and slogans raised at the site of the dharna on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, two Trinamool Congress leaders have come under the purview of Central investigative agencies in connection with the RG Kar case.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) interrogated Trinamool Congress MLA Nirmal Ghosh for over seven hours on Monday.

The victim’s parents had accused Ghosh and the police for pushing for a quick cremation on August 9.

In his defense, Ghosh has said: “I went to RG Kar hospital on the night of the crime as Abhaya’s house falls in my Assembly constituency. I went there because I have a moral responsibility as a local MLA.”

Also, TMC MLA from Serampore Sudipto Roy has been questioned by the CBI on the rape and murder case and by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with allegations of financial irregularities and corruption at RG Kar.

Earlier this month, the CBI and the ED had also conducted searches at Roy’s properties.

Roy is the president of the West Bengal Medical Council, the body that issues medical registration to doctors, enabling them to practise medicine in the state. He was also at the helm of a patient welfare committee of the RG Kar.

The CBI also summoned RG Kar doctor Apurba Biswas on Tuesday. He was one of the doctors in the forensic team that performed the initial autopsy.
