The West Bengal cabinet on Wednesday approved a financial relief scheme for Group C and Group D employees who lost their jobs following court orders in the infamous recruitment corruption case.

The new scheme, titled 'West Bengal Livelihood and Social Security Interim Scheme”, aims to provide temporary financial assistance to those affected until a final verdict is delivered by the judiciary.

Under the scheme, Group C employees will receive ₹25,000 per month, while Group D employees will be granted ₹20,000 monthly. The scheme will be operated under the state labour department.

Chief minister Mamata Banerjee, addressing issue, after cabinet meeting, said, “Many of these young people are struggling to feed their families. Some claim they did nothing wrong, yet lost their jobs due to court orders. We have filed a review petition. While we await the court's final judgment, we must ask ourselves— how will they survive until then?”

Describing the move as a humanitarian initiative, Mamata said the state government couldn’t stand by idly while families plunged into distress. She clarified that the scheme is voluntary and any eligible person may opt out if they choose.

“This is a matter of principle for us. Some may say this relief isn’t necessary— that’s their opinion. But we took this decision after considerable thought,” Mamata added.

Taking a dig at the growing trend of public interest litigations, the CM SAID, ““Words are drowning in words and people are dying in the process. So we have created this principled scheme to provide at least some support.”

Mamata had earlier met with chief secretary Manoj Pant and signaled the state’s intention to support dismissed candidates. With the cabinet’s green light, that promise has now taken formal shape.

The administration believes this decision will offer a lifeline to thousands of affected families, giving them temporary relief as the legal process continues.
