West Bengal Governor, C. V. Ananda Bose on Thursday issued a directive to the state government, urging action against Bratya Basu, the state Education Minister, including his removal from the Cabinet.
An official statement from Raj Bhavan confirmed that same.
This decision follows a political gathering held at the Gour Banga University, led by Bratya Basu, along with other Ministers, MPs, MLAs, and political leaders on March 30.
"The Chancellor and Governor of West Bengal has directed the state government to take action against the erring Minister who has deliberately violated the election code of conduct, including his removal from the Cabinet," read the Raj Bhavan statement.
The Model Code of Conduct (MCC) serves as a set of conventions during elections, aimed at maintaining orderliness, cleanliness, and peace throughout the campaigning, polling, and counting processes, and preventing any misuse of state machinery and finances by the ruling party.
The strained relationship between Basu and Bose has escalated in recent days.
Following Bengal Education Minister Bratya Basu's labeling of him as 'insane' amid discussions on operational issues in state-run universities, Governor C V Ananda Bose retaliated, stating that such remarks came after he had already approved names for interim vice-chancellors, as proposed by the minister.
The governor emphasised that Basu's allegations were an attempt to tarnish his relationship with his constitutional colleague, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
"Minister Shri Bratya Basu has called Governor 'insane' and suffering from Alzheimer's. This is at a time when, as desired by the HCM, HG has accepted all the 4 names suggested by the Minister for appointment as interim VCs of the vacant universities," the Raj Bhavan posted on X.
