West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose got a clean chit in connection with the molestation allegations against him after he reportedly conducted an inquiry through a retired judge from Puducherry over the charges.

As per the report of the enquiry, it was found that the allegations levelled by the complainant were baseless.

The inquiry report furnished on May 11, 2024 said, “The analysis of testimony from individuals who witnessed and were present in the immediate proximity of the locations of the alleged incident leads to a singular conclusion that the complainant's conduct, timing, and chosen strategies raise doubts and are seemingly not above board. The allegations and the manner of their execution are shrouded in a shadow of doubt.”

However, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress (TMC) on Saturday rubbished the findings of the inquiry into molestation allegations against Governor CV Ananda Bose, wondering if “it is a comedy?”

TMC leader Kunal Ghosh rejected the findings of the inquiry and said “Is it a comedy or what? How come he conducts an inquiry against himself, under himself and that too by someone who is an acquaintance of his? If he is innocent, he should be saying that he would not take undue advantage of Article 361 and is ready to face the probe”.

“So, I think there is a comedy serial being run inside the Raj Bhavan. It is useless. What the Supreme Court says about Article 361, we are waiting for that,” Ghosh added.

The Supreme Court on Friday agreed to examine the contours of Article 361 of the Constitution, which grants “blanket immunity” to governors from any kind of criminal prosecution.

A notice was also issued to the West Bengal government by a bench headed by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, on the plea of a contractual woman employee, who was alleged molestation by state Governor CV Ananda Bose.

The female employee has sought judicial scrutiny of Article 361 of the Constitution granting “immunity” to the governor.

Article 361 is an exception to Article 14 (right to equality) of the Constitution and provides that the President or the Governor is not answerable to any court for the exercise of the powers and duties of his office.
