A horrific incident in Dhangara village under Paikar police station in Birbhum, a man allegedly threw acid on his girlfriend’s face on Monday after she refused to marry him. Police arrested the accused shortly after the incident and the victim is undergoing treatment in critical condition at a hospital, with severe burns on her face and other parts of her body.
According to police, the accused has been identified as Abir Sheikh, a resident of the same area where the incident took place. “Abir was in a relationship with Rizia Sultana, a woman from the same area, for some time. On Monday, while Rizia was on her way to a friend’s house, Abir confronted her.
He expressed his desire to marry her soon, but Rizia told him that she was not considering marriage at the moment. This led to an argument between them,” said a police officer.
In a sudden and shocking act, Abir took out a bottle from his pocket and threw its contents at Rizia’s face before fleeing the scene. “The young woman collapsed in pain, clutching her face, as she writhed on the road. Locals rushed to her aid and immediately informed her family. She was then taken to Rampurhat Government Medical College in critical condition,” said the officer.
Rizia’s family lodged a police complaint, alleging that Abir had attacked her with acid. Acting on the complaint, the police swiftly arrested the accused and have begun an interrogation to gather more details about the incident. The case has sparked outrage, with demands for strict action against the perpetrator.
