West Bengal government has restored security at former CM Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee's Palm Avenue residence, where his wife Meera continues to live.

In a move being viewed as a gesture of political courtesy, the West Bengal government has decided to restore security at the Palm Avenue residence of former Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee. The decision comes nearly two years after his demise, addressing a controversy that had erupted over the withdrawal of security from the residence shortly after his death. According to official sources, security personnel have now been redeployed to the modest flat where Bhattacharjee’s wife, Meera, continues to live. The former Chief Minister passed away on August 8, 2024, leaving behind his wife and son, Suchetan.

Following his death, the then-ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) government had withdrawn all security arrangements from the residence, a move that drew criticism in political circles at the time. The issue remained a subject of debate, with many questioning the decision to remove protection from the home of a former Chief Minister’s family.

After assuming office in May this year, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has now taken steps to reverse that decision. Despite ongoing ideological differences with Left parties, the government has moved to restore security for Meera, a step that political observers say reflects an effort to uphold institutional respect and dignity.

Meera, who continues to live a simple and unassuming life in the Palm Avenue flat, has remained in the same residence filled with memories of her late husband. The home itself carries historical significance—former Chief Minister Jyoti Basu had once suggested that Bhattacharya shift to a larger and more convenient residence during his tenure. However, he chose to remain in the modest flat, a decision that his wife has continued to honour even after his passing.

Sources indicate that Meera has welcomed the change in government and acknowledged the decision to restore security. While maintaining ideological neutrality, she has expressed hope for a return to stable governance in the state, free from past controversies.

The move to reinstate security is being interpreted in political circles as an attempt by the current administration to set a precedent of civility in public life, even amid sharp political rivalries.
