West Bengal government has announced that August 13 and 14 will be observed as ‘Partition Horrors Remembrance Day’ to honour the suffering, sacrifices, and resilience of those affected by the Partition of India. The decision follows a communication from the Union Ministry of Culture. Acting on this, Soumitra Mohan, secretary of the state’s Information and Cultural Affairs Department, has issued directives to District Magistrates across the state to organise commemorative events.
According to a notification issued from Nabanna, the state secretariat, district administrations have been instructed to hold programmes that preserve the memory of the tragic events of Partition and highlight the strength of those who endured its aftermath. Each district has been asked to conduct three primary activities in coordination with local stakeholders and relevant government departments.
As part of the observance, a candle march will be held on the evening of August 14 at designated locations within district headquarters. The march is expected to see participation from government officials, students, educational institutions, cultural organisations, and members of the public.
In addition, exhibitions showcasing the history of Partition, its humanitarian consequences, and stories of resilience will be organised on August 13 and 14 at prominent public venues. These exhibitions will include archival photographs and documents to raise awareness among citizens. Schools have been encouraged to arrange student visits to these displays.
The programmes will also feature screenings of documentary films provided by the Ministry of Culture. To support the initiative, the state government has allocated Rs 30,000 to each district for organising the events. District Magistrates have been directed to ensure proper arrangements and smooth execution of all activities in consultation with concerned departments.
The observance aims to create greater public awareness about the historical significance of Partition while paying tribute to those who endured one of the most painful chapters in the subcontinent’s history.
